Fernando Cañedo is a Brazilian composer, sound designer, music producer, and multi-instrumentalist. He is the founder of Data Estelar Estúdios, a production company that specializes in creating soundtracks, sound design, audio mixing, and post-production for series, films, advertising, and digital media. He has been involved in projects shown on various television channels, web platforms, and streaming services, including Cartoon Network, HBO Max, Comedy Central, YouTube, Paramount Plus, Netflix, TNT, Globo Play, Futura, Gloob, Warner, and Canal Brasil, as well as in international festival circuits.

Within the most well-known projects to which he contributes, he is responsible for the original music and post sound of the character Any Malu, the first digital Influencer of cartoons created by Combo Studio and powered by Cartoon Network. The YouTube channel 'The (sur)real world of Any Malu' as over 3 million subscribers and over 500 million views in total. Cañedo has been contributing to this project since 2015, the year it was created, and also to the derivative and spin-off series broadcast on throughout Latin America - such as 'Malubys', 'Best Of Any Malu', 'The Real World of Any Malu', 'Any Malu Backstage', 'MaluCast' and 'Any Malu Show'. This one is a series that explores CN's programming and, in one of its segments, adopts a Talk Show theme, where it invites other network series characters for interviews, such as 'The Powerpuff Girls', 'Scooby-Doo and Shaggy', 'Ben 10', 'The Amazing World of Gumball', and 'Regular Show'. The series achieved audience leadership during its debut on pay-TV throughout Brazil among children aged 6 to 11 in 2020. Among open channels, the series lagged only behind Rede Globo during its airing time. Regarding original songs and parodies, it has amassed over 50 million views on YouTube. In the 'TOP 10 CARTOON OPENINGS', 'Any Malu Show' ranked 3rd in popular votes, in the competition celebrated on CN's social media networks (LATAM). Besides other series titles, he also contributed to adult animation, such as 'Família Pharmaco' (2021), created by Miguel Falabella and featuring a large ensemble cast from Brazilian TV, 'Animatoons' (2016), 'Superdrags' (2018), and the 'Porta dos Fundos Christmas Special' (2021). Additionally, he is a co-composer for the serie 'Gigablaster' (since 2018), a co-production of Estricnina Desenhos Animados with Copa Studio.

 

Although he is best known for his work in animation, with over 300 episodes of series released, it's important to highlight his experience in advertising, films, games and trailers.

In 2021, he won the 'Best Original Soundtrack' category at the 'RIMA Awards', and was nominated in the 'Narrative Film Soundtrack' category at the Garoa Awards for the music composed for the acclaimed Portuguese-Brazilian drama 'A Margem'. For the short drama 'Transfugo', he also received a nomination for 'Best Soundtrack' at the 'RIMA Awards'. In 2023, he won the 'Best Sound Awards' category and received a nomination for 'Best Music' at the international festival 'Top Indie Film Awards' for the animated short film 'Dream Eaters'. He was also a finalist two consecutive times (2018 and 2019) in the Berlin International Sound Design Competition for the animated shorts 'Wrapped' and 'Escape.'

In the field of advertising, he has provided freelance music production services to audio production companies like Satélite Áudio, Trio, Loud, Evil Twins, and directly for various agencies and brands.

As an instrumentalist, he has collaborated with national and international musicians and producers, such as the French artist CYESM on the albums 'Scorein 2014 and 'The Sinner and The Priest' in 2019, and the Danish musician Lars Christensen on the album 'Road to Redneck County' in 2018, released by Bentley Records, as well as the single 'Old Grizzly' in 2021 by Public Alert. He is also a member of 'FernanDUO' alongside his friend, Rio de Janeiro pianist and composer Fernando Moura. They released the albums 'Aqui é Lá' in 2019 and 'Aí Vamos Nós' in 2021. He creates and licenses original music for various music libraries like Astral Wolf Records, Kiwiii, Punks, Jacarandá Áudio, and the production labels of Data Estelar Studios.

Additionally, he is a beta tester for 'Audio Fusion Bureau' (a Brazilian company that develops VST plugins) and is a co-founder of 'Urutu Áudio', a developer of VSTi instruments for Native Instruments' Kontakt Full software, with sales in more than 23 countries.

He conducts the workshop 'Na Trilha da Prática', covering key topics and concepts related to the practice of creating soundtracks and audio post-production for audio-visual content and its specificities.

Fernando Cañedo has a genuine passion for the process of musical and audiovisual creation, the technology involved, and the art of storytelling. He considers the exploration, recording, blending, and manipulation of timbres, resonances, and textures to be parallel achievements to modalities such as painting and handicraft.
