workflow production

Curious to know how our workflow functions in full audio-visual production? Sure! Let's dive in!

This is an example of how the step-by-step production workflow is applied in the model for animated series.

Remember that this sequential order is the most recommended for animated series, being just a suggestion as an example. Nothing is mandatory as each project has distinct requirements.

The recording of original voices is part of the first phase of audio pre-production, where we ensure the best quality by recording in multi-channel, up to 16 online audio sources, and real-time monitoring.

In this phase, we prepare the overall editing of the recorded dialogue audio, selecting the best takes and conducting pre-treatment for any unwanted details that may arise from microphones or actors' performances (such as noises, clips, cracks, pops, and the like). When necessary, it is also the time to insert temporary specific effects to guide the production of the storyboard and animatic.

Musical pre-production involves creating sketches of original music, opening themes, and original songs to serve as a guide in the production of storyboards and animatics for the project (when necessary).

Produção de Música Original

As the visual material enters the final stages of production, we begin developing the original music (soundtrack/scoring/incidental), which will significantly enhance storytelling. This approach involves recording both real and virtual instruments, conceptualizing character themes, incidental music, musical cues, and instrumental effects, among others.

Irrespective of the chosen genre, the instrumentation, timbres, and musical performance are practiced to ensure the best possible adaptation of the musical works to the video.

This phase  is responsible for all sound-related materials produced for the scenes, directly, precisely, and creatively enhancing storytelling. In this stage, we produce, record, and edit sound effects and sound design, ambiences and backgrounds, and foley (footsteps, clothing, objects manipulated in scenes). All of this is crafted with extreme attention to detail, bringing personality and reality to the visual material.

Towards the final stages, we record ADR (Automated Dialog Replacement) materials, which involve re-recording additional dialogue following the lip sync of the already animated characters.

Now, with all audio elements of the project prepared and available, it's time to address all the audio details: editing, treatments, equalization, reviewing the synchronization of all sound elements, and adapting to new cuts in the final OFFLINE edit (when necessary). This phase will ensure that everything is polished and aligned to prepare the material for mixing and delivery.

Finalização/Delivery

In the pre-mixing or pre-mix process, all available audio elements are pre-mixed independently by category group (music mix, sound design, and dialogues). This is done to achieve a balance among them before moving on to the next stage.

Mixing involves blending the sound elements to unify the categories and create the overall sound personality. This is achieved by manipulating the balance between overall volumes, panning, and balancing dynamic and frequency ranges. The goal is to emphasize the needs of each audio aspect, highlighting all details at relevant visual moments.

In the finalization stage, we perform technical loudness adjustments for the master and quality conversions of the material according to specifications. We also handle cut edits for reductions or adaptations of the ONLINE material, and then create prints and exports of the copies for delivery.
